Investing with Seismic means setting the trends, not following them

July 14, 2022

At Seismic we don’t follow the herd, we watch megatrends and make strategic decisions.

As we talked about last week, 2021 was a historically-successful year for venture capital investing. This helps show the massive potential in privately-held start-ups, particularly in the various fields of technology. However, you may be asking yourself, how much longer can the success they have seen continue? What is the right area to invest in to profit in this next wave?

Take a look at the often-hyped world of cryptocurrencies. Currently, all the major cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin and Ether, are down from their peak valuations. Digital assets such as crypto seem to have found a new normal in the markets, and it is far below their heights in November. Despite the decline, venture capitalists are on pace to pour a record amount of capital into the crypto and blockchain space this year. This kind of “groupthink” behavior does not characterize Seismic’s approach to venture capital.

As early stage investors, we are not relying on other VCs to point us in a direction. We recognize that herd mentality often tells a misleading story of value. Like the great hockey player Wayne Gretsky said, “I do not skate to where the puck is, I head to where it is going.” As such we are not simply just another venture firm looking to break into whatever the hot new trend is. We are searching for firms that are disruptive innovators, firms that have the potential to open new, undiscovered markets across the globe. The trend we’re following is the trend towards what we believe to be the most successful and game-changing companies–those that break through the status-quo of their industries. Our founders and advisory board’s experience are leveraged to nurture start-ups and improve their efficiency, primarily by taking away the mundane, (HR, payroll etc.) and empowering our companies to focus on product and customers.
